Atelier · The Hand Behind the Work
The Artist,
and the Atelier.
The name stays quiet; only the hand speaks. Behind every piece is an artist who, through a fine hand-painting craft honed on the smallest of canvases, lays a painting upon a single, living form.
The Artist
A hand that has painted whole worlds onto the smallest of canvases now turns toward the back of one of the largest insects on earth.
The Name Follows the Work.
How the artist is named changes from piece to piece — some bear a full name and portrait, some the name alone, and some are released under the house itself as “made by HERCULES LABO.” Each choice exists so that the work itself remains the protagonist.
In the Artist’s Words
The hand speaks; the name may wait.
What I leave upon this single specimen matters more than who I am. To withhold the name, or to reveal it, is always a decision made for the work.
Five Stages
From a single specimen to a finished work — to grind, to design, to apply, to protect, to enclose. Unhurried, one stage after another.
Stage 01
Grinding the Ground
The shell of a specimen that has lived out its natural life is carefully cleaned and ground true. The canvas that will hold the painting is first prepared in silence.
Stage 02
Design
Reading the form and ridgelines of each specimen, a design is drawn. A composition made for this one individual, and for this single work alone.
Stage 03
Hand-Painting
Fine brushes and pigments are brought to the shell. Stroke upon stroke of millimetre-scale craft is laid down, each like a grain of light.
Stage 04
Finishing Coat
The finished painting is gently sealed beneath a clear layer — the last and most careful gesture, made so the lustre and colour endure across the years.
Stage 05
Enclosing the Case
The completed work is set into its dedicated case and the opening is closed with a wax seal, accompanied by its Certificate of Authenticity and a unique serial. Here, the piece leaves the atelier.
The Atelier
An occasion to quietly witness the work being made is now in preparation.
